Levan Davitashvili, Georgia’s First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, on Tuesday said the visit of the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his delegation to the country was an “expression of great support” for the cooperation between the two nations and for the “choice made by the Georgian people” during the parliamentary elections on Saturday.
I think [this visit] is very important because Hungary is currently chairing the Council of the European Union and is a member of the [bloc]”, Davitashvili said.
Highlighting the Hungarian Government’s “continuous support”, the Minister said, “Hungary clearly supported Georgia in being granted the [EU membership] candidate status, and I am confident future cooperation will be strengthened. This is important both in the political arena, as well as for economic, cultural and various connections”.
He also noted his meeting with Márton Nagy, the Minister for National Economy of Hungary, to discuss enhancing economic ties.
In addition to our economic commission with various countries, we have established an important collaboration with Hungary. We have agreed to expand our intergovernmental cooperation format, which focuses on strengthening economic ties between our two nations”, Davitashvili said.
Hungary has a strong economy, and we have discussed the potential for cooperation, particularly in maximising Georgia’s transit potential. We also explored Hungarian companies’ interest in investing in our port infrastructure, as both Georgia and Hungary play crucial roles in transit. Consequently, we anticipate increased investment interest in Georgia”, he added.
Additionally, he said the parties committed to identifying specific investment projects, aiming to engage both private and public sectors in fostering economic collaboration.
We will prepare a package of investment projects for our Hungarian colleagues, and I am sure interest from Hungary will be significant”, Davitashvili said.
The Hungarian delegation arrived on Monday, with the prime ministers, economy and finance ministers of the two countries meeting in Tbilisi.
