Council Leader Continues Fight for Better Funding as Financial Pressures Remain

The leader of East Riding Council says she is continuing to press for better funding for the area.

Responding to a question from Liberal Democrat Councillor Denis Healey about underfunding of local authorities by central government, Conservative Councillor Anne Handley said she will fight for more cash.

East Riding Council is continuing to face large pressures on it’s finances.

Finance Portfolio Holder – Councillor Nigel Wilkinson – says the pressures are coming from a range of factors.

Councillor Wilkinson has previously stated that the authority had found savings to cover a £9.4m budget gap forecast for this year.

He added they whilst they were not facing a situation as dire as other authorities a plan to realise further savings was underway. to prevent future financial insecurity.

The review follows Birmingham City Council’s issuing of a Section 114 notice several months ago, the mechanism which local authorities use to declare insolvency, with warnings that others could follow.

Councillor Wilkinson says the financial problems in local government are not unique to the East Riding, but are set to continue for several years.
